The birth of Ava DuVernay occurred on the 24th of August 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise at the age of a little girl. Aunt Denise was a nurse and worked night shifts so that she could devote her days to literature, theatre, and art. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay discovered through experience that art is a great tool to engage in social activism. DuVernay grew up with an aunt who was socially aware and taught her to use the arts as a means of expressing herself. DuVernay was raised living with family members in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historical Civil Rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Selma, Alabama would be the inspiration for her later a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English as well as African American study. DuVernay discovered a passion for the field of broadcast journalism while a student. DuVernay was a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to observe the house of a member of the jury and look through their trash. Following her disappointment with journalistic work by the assignments she was given, DuVernay decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior publicity assistant in a tiny film studio, right after graduating from the college. The year 1999 was the time she launched her own business of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Alongside PR, her agency also launched several social media and lifestyle networks, including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
